DQE seizes opportunity in Indian animation biz
'Charlie Chaplin''The Jungle Book'The fledgling Indian animation sector, mostly dominated by kids' television producers, is on a roll. PricewaterhouseCoopers valued it at $510 million last year while projecting a 20% annual growth rate, seeing expansion to $1.27 billion by 2015.While Crest Animation and Toonz Animation remain strong players in the kids' animation arena, DQ Entertainment is riding on several international co-productions.Tapaas Chakravarti, a fan of Disney animation, Marvel and DC Comics and India's best-known comicbook brand Amar Chitra Katha, founded DQE in 1999. Like other Indian animation houses, DQE's initial business model was to offer cost-effective pure- service options, but this soon changed."It was almost like the animation world and its possibilities were lying dormant in front of me, waiting to unfold," says Chakravarti. The new plan was intellectual property ownership, co-productions and global distribution. To this end, DQE teamed with toon houses Onyx Films, Method Animation, the Moonscoop Group and several other global companies."Aligning with successful global partners has been a key factor," Chakravarti says. "It is important to keep an open mind and be willing to learn from others, especially when you know they have had a head-start on you in this space."The result was a flood of properties that are household names including "The Jungle Book," "Peter Pan," "Lassie and Friends," "Iron Man," "Charlie Chaplin," "Casper," "The Adventures of Young Robin Hood" and "The Little Prince.""We have to be convinced that there is value in the investment and have been careful to choose properties that are classic or iconic and have existing brand recognition," says Chakravarti.DQE has raised $100 million to fund its expansion plans. These include investing in Indian IP, a wise move in a market known for its insatiable appetite for local programming. The Indian animation industry represents an untapped and rapidly growing market," Chakravarti says. "We have partnered with Disney India, Nick India and Cartoon Network to develop content based on Indian mythology, folklore and writings like detective series 'Feluda' by famous personalities such as Satyajit Ray. These properties are already attracting interest from broadcasters worldwide, and we are happy to carry these to global audiences."The company also has plans for feature film versions of "Jungle Book" and "Peter Pan." Meanwhile, its international television co-productions continue apace.Their enthusiasm and energy is contagious," says Christophe di Sabatino, group executive chairman of Moonscoop says of DQE.VARIETY JUNIOR Blasts from past power int'l kids sales | Books and toys aren't fail-safe TV fodder | Kids animation making bigger international play | Toons in transition | Pop go the platforms | Disney Junior acing frosh year | DQE seizes opportunity in Indian animation biz | Shingle dabbles in 'Baby' babble | Argentina teen fare evolves in post-Cris Morena era Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Full Movie

Amin
A Cinemashena presentation in association with Eyesteelfilm. (International Sales: Cinemashena, Montreal.) Produced, directed, edited by Shahin Parhami. With: Amin Aghaie, Ustad Kiyani, Jahantoor Rahimi, Farhad Aghaie. Housein Aghaie, Galyna Omelchenko.A beautifully crafted portrait of the extraordinary young musician/ethnomusicologist Amin Aghaie, "Amin" shuttles between the pale marble halls of the Kiev Tchaikovsky Conservatory and the impossibly vivid colors of the Qashai community in Iran, the two worlds tightly linked by Aghaie's thesis research on the disappearing musical culture of his people. The tradition is fading fast, and Aghaie's popular concerts, the very events that might keep it current, are regularly banned. Fueled by its subject's passionate commitment (and virtuoso violin), and functioning on several levels, the docu could resonate theatrically with arthouse auds. Iranian helmer-producer-editor-d.p. Shahin Parhami, a close friend of Aghaie's, comfortably settles in with his close-knit family, all musicians in awe of their kin's casual brilliance and generosity. Parhami shows Aghaie giving brother Housein gentle pointers on his accomplished piano rendition of a Bach prelude. Chronicling the culture of the Qashai, a nomadic Turkish people of mysterious origin who settled in southwestern Iran, requires a certain degree of detective work. On the road, Aghaie hunts down rumors to locate the few remaining practitioners of Qashai music. Aghaie is enthusiastically welcomed and regaled with impromptu performances, which he records for his archives. He captures extended sessions with players of various exotic instruments and enjoys a moving reunion with legendary composer-singer Ustad Kiyani, his 105-year-old-mentor, who still sings up a storm to Aghaie's spirited violin accompaniment. But with limited time and virtually no resources, Aghaie is fighting a losing battle. In order to fund his research and continued studies, he and his brothers resort to selling their instruments, Aghaie sadly tracing the contours of the last of his three violins on the wall before parting with it. Back in Kiev, romantic jaunts with fellow musician Galyna Omelchenko, whose passionate piano playing can sometimes be heard in the background, alternate with long, introspective interviews. These are filmed in black-and-white and with an almost uncomfortable intimacy, as Aghaie airs his doubts and fears to the camera. Not the least impressive of the docu's achievements is that it thoroughly familiarizes listeners with Qashai music, which might sound initially alien and off-putting to Western ears. By the film's end, a violin/drum/piano composition by Aghaie and his brothers, obviously filmed before they were forced to sell their instruments, rocks the house.Camera (color, HD), Parhami; music, Amin Aghaie.
